The discoid meniscus is an anatomical variant of the normal meniscus where it is broader and saucer-shaped. There are variations in incidence in various population groups ranging from 0.4-17% for lateral discoid meniscus and 0.1-3 % for medial discoid meniscus.
2011-12-01 · Introduction. Discoid medial meniscus is a rare abnormality, with incidence estimated at 0.12%. The present study describes this congenital abnormality anatomically and reports clinical results in four symptomatic cases managed by surgery.
Treatment will depend upon the type of discoid meniscus. Complete and incomplete discoid menisci with no tears are typically treated with saucerization, a procedure in which the meniscus is cut and re-shaped into a crescent. More commonly, the discoid meniscus can be surgically shaped into a normal appearing meniscus, a procedure called saucerization of the meniscus. In addition to management of the torn portion of the meniscus, many people with a discoid meniscus have symptoms such as popping as a result of instability of the meniscus cartilage.

A discoid meniscus is something some people are born with and it is a meniscus that is circular rather than moon-shaped. A discoid meniscus is vulnerable to tearing but resecting the excessively large fragment of a discoid meniscus does not seem to have any adverse effects as the patient is left with a normal looking moon-shaped meniscus. A discoid meniscus has abnormal morphology. It is thicker and covers more of the tibial plateau.
