Bach wrote three wonderful sonatas for the viola da gamba (an early, slightly smaller relative of the modern cello). Lovingly recorded by Steven Isserlis and Richard Egarr, they are here joined by works by Handel and Scarlatti in a programme of haunting tranquillity.

Since Bach and Handel were born the same year, 1685, I wondered if they'd ever met.

But Handel’s life was approaching its very real twilight. The great colleague whom Handel never met, Johann Sebastian Bach, had undergone two operations on his eyes, both unsuccessful, the second of which led within months to Bach’s death in 1750. By the next year, Handel’s own eyesight was deteriorating rapidly.

He was born in 1685 in Eisenach, Germany the son of Johan Ambrosius Bach, also a fine musician. Orphaned at the age of ten, he went to live with his elder brother J C Bach who was largely responsible for the young Bach’s musical education. Recorded at Severance Hall in April 1978, the Cleveland Symphonic Winds bring the brilliance of 18th century composers Holst, Handel, and Bach to the 20th century.
